The interpretation of an existing script or score is an essential element in many performances. Lili Reynaud Dewar is interested in staging techniques and ritualistic aspects of theatre: her work takes the form of installations which include sculptures, texts, photographs and visual signs — and also involve the live participation of musicians and actors. In the suite of exhibitions and performances titled Interpretation, that she initiated in 2010, she develops her own reading, and explores the intimate legacies of a peculiar body of work: that of the African-American musician Sun Ra.
The book Interpretation can be considered as the last part of a complex project that wasn’t organized programmatically but rather improvised, through a piecemeal approach to art and research as such. The publication unfolds this elaboration through a text by the artist and documentation of her working process; it also gathers multiple visions of Sun Ra, from photographs taken by Philippe Gras at the concert Sun Ra and his Arkestra gave in 1971 at the Fondation Maeght, to texts by Diedrich Diederichsen, Anthony Elms and J. Griffith Rollefson on his music, his theatrics and his politics. For a book is less a matter of pinning down the definite truth of a fact, or of one’s fiction, but an exercise in opening a multiplicity of interpretations.

L’interprétation d’un scénario ou d’une partition joue un rôle essentiel dans toute performance. Dans son travail, Lili Reynaud Dewar a recours à certaines techniques de mise en scène et reprend au théâtre de nombreux aspects rituels, développant des projets où se mêlent sculptures, textes, photographies, films, incluant parfois la participation de musiciens et d’acteurs. Dans l’ensemble d’expositions et de performances qui constitue le cycle Interpretation, entrepris en 2010, Lili Reynaud Dewar propose une lecture personnelle d’une œuvre singulière : celle du musicien afro-américain Sun Ra.
Interpretation — le livre — peut être considéré comme la dernière phase d’un projet entrepris sans programme prédéfini, improvisé, fragmenté, inventé au fil d’une recherche. Ce volume donne à  saisir ce processus à travers un essai de l’artiste et de nombreux documents de travail ; il rassemble également différents points de vue sur le musicien, depuis les photographies prises par Philippe Gras au concert de Sun Ra and his Arkestra aux Nuits de la Fondation Maeght en 1971, jusqu’aux textes de Diedrich Diederichsen, Anthony Elms et J. Griffith Rollefson, qui reviennent sur sa musique et ses écrits dans leurs dimensions esthétiques et politiques. Plutôt que d’établir la vérité définitive d’un fait, fût-il réel ou fiction, le livre, comme tout livre, permet d’en déployer les possibles interprétations.
