Laura Lamiel (née à Morlaix en 1948, vit à Paris) a construit, au fil de plusieurs décennies, une identité artistique exemplaire par une œuvre qui ne cesse d’évoluer et d’agréger de nouveaux éléments de vocabulaire, en brouillant les frontières entre espace d’exposition et atelier. Une fois abandonnée la frontalité du tableau, elle a développé à partir des années 1990 des installations dans l’espace dont la couleur et la lumière sont des paramètres essentiels. Ses structures — surtout ses cellules — empruntent autant à la psychanalyse qu’à une certaine cosmologie spirituelle et accueillent un répertoire de formes sensibles, constitué d’objets trouvés, de collections, de certaines taxinomies de matériaux mis en tension avec les surfaces immaculées du métal illuminé par les tubes fluorescents. Depuis les cellules, elle a développé dans les années 2000 d’autres dispositifs — la transparence et la réflexion du miroir espion, les espaces pénétrables ou enfouis – et amplifié la charge biographique et affective des matériaux qu’ils accueillent. Cette multiplicité poétique culmine avec l’exposition Les Yeux de W au CRAC Occitanie, à Sète, au printemps 2019. Cet ouvrage retrace cette évolution, en accompagnant une chronologie de ses expositions des vingt dernières années d’une anthologie d’écrits critiques, d’un entretien inédit avec l’artiste et de deux nouveaux essais qui renouvellent l’analyse et l’interprétation de son œuvre.

Over decades, Laura Lamiel (born 1948 in Morlaix, France, lives in Paris) has built an exceptional artistic identity. In fact, her work and vocabulary have never ceased to evolve, incorporating new elements, and continually blurring the boundaries between the exhibition space and the studio. In the 1990s, after abandoning the frontality of painting, she started making installations where color and light play an essential role. Her structures, in particular her cells, are as inspired by psychoanalysis as by spiritual cosmology. They host a repertoire of sensible forms constituted by found objects, collections and certain taxonomies of materials that contrast with the immaculate surfaces of steel that she illuminates with fluorescent tubes. In the 2000s, following the cells, she developed other apparatuses — playing with the transparency and reflective nature of oneway mirrors; creating penetrable or buried spaces — while amplifying the biographical and affective charge of the adopted materials. This poetic multiplicity culminates in her exhibition Les Yeux de W (The Eyes of W) at CRAC Occitanie, Sète, in the Spring 2019. This book traces this evolution of Laura Lamiel’s work. It presents a chronology of her exhibitions from the last 20 years alongside an anthology of critical writings, a previously unpublished interview with the artist and two original essays that offer a new analysis of her work.
